John the Ripper is an extremely popular password cracking tool that initally was born on Unix, but is now available on a wide range of platforms.
It is very fast at password cracking and has many different options available.
Even the brute force option has options to modify it: such as the ability to choose numbers only, letters only, lanman and all characters.

Brutus is a tool used for remote online password cracking.
It has the ability to password crack many protocols including: Basic HTTP Authentication, HTTP forms, Telnet, FTP and other.
It works under Windows and has a nice GUI with it.
You can customize some options within the tools.

Dictionary Attacks
Hydra is a fast network password cracker.
Originally designed as a proof of concept to display how easy it is to crack passwords, this tools is very versatile and can be used for many network protocols such as: HTTPS, HTTP-PROXY, SMB, SMBNT, MS-SQL, MYSQL, REXEC, ICQ, SAP/R3, LDAP2, LDAP3, Postgres, Teamspeak, Cisco auth, Cisco enable, TELNET, FTP and more.

Medusa is intended to be a speedy, massively parallel, modular, login brute-forcer. It supports many protocols: AFP, CVS, FTP, HTTP, IMAP, rlogin, SSH, Subversion, and VNC to name a few. Other online crackers are THC Hydra and Ncrack. Review this tool.
